Last week the year 9s visited a coal mine in connection with their current topic of ‘Economic Activities’. Related to this, they study the different employment sectors and one of these is the primary sector of which the coal industry is part.

The groups learned about the changes that took place in the coal mines over the years, going from manual labour and pit ponies to the use of huge machinery that had to be assembled once underground. The group were all suitably attired with helmets and lamps and some even came up to the surface looking like real miners with coal dust on their faces. A good time was had by all.
