Year 7 Pupils Conquer New Heights at Scugdale Crag

At Fyling Hall, we believe that education is not just about what happens in the classroom. It’s about building confidence, fostering teamwork, and creating lasting bonds. That’s why, to kick-start the new school year, our Year 7 pupils recently embarked on an exciting team-bonding day filled with adventure, challenges, and plenty of fun.

Led by Mrs Swain and Mrs Jeeves (our fantastic Year 7 tutors), the group set off with David, our Health & Safety Manager, who kindly drove the bus and stayed to help throughout the day. Their destination? The breathtaking Scugdale Crag near Guisborough, where they were met by Kara and her team at Mini Rockstars, who guided them through an unforgettable day of scrambling, climbing and abseiling.

The aim of the day was simple: to encourage our pupils to step outside their comfort zones, take on new challenges, and support each other as they explored the heights of Scugdale Crag. It was an opportunity not only to bond as a new year group but also to build resilience and a sense of pride in their achievements.

Highlights of the Day

Throughout the day, it was wonderful to see our pupils grow more confident with every climb. They started as individuals, unsure of what lay ahead, but as the hours passed, it was clear that Year 7 had already begun to form a supportive, encouraging team. Whether it was offering a hand to a friend or cheering each other on, their kindness and determination were on full display.

Mrs Jeeves, said “I was incredibly proud of the young people who conquered their fears, took on new challenges, and created new bonds amongst Year 7. A special mention must go to Harry, who was halfway down an abseiling rope when it started hailing but didn’t falter! It was a fantastic day all around.”

Mrs Swain echoed this sentiment, adding, “I was super impressed with all of Year 7. They were a delight to have on the trip – polite, supportive, and full of encouragement for one another. One of the instructors even commented on how well they worked as a team. Each pupil should be proud of what they achieved, and it was such a lovely way for the year group to bond.”

The Power of Challenge and Teamwork

The day wasn’t just about climbing rocks; it was about climbing personal mountains, too. We watched as pupils pushed themselves further than they thought possible, and it was heartening to see how naturally they embraced each challenge. By the end of the day, new friendships were formed, fears were conquered, and the bonds that will shape their time at Fyling Hall had already begun to take root.

We’re confident that the confidence and teamwork Year 7 showed at Scugdale Crag will stay with them throughout their school journey, and we’re excited to see what they will accomplish together.

Keep an eye out for more adventures as our pupils continue to grow, learn, and achieve – both in and out of the classroom.
