Boarding on the Yorkshire coast, at a school small enough to know every student
Fyling Hall is a small day and boarding school near Robin Hood’s Bay, founded in 1923. Around 180 students, small classes, and boarding that fits around your family, whether that is every night, the school week, or the odd night when it suits.
Places available for January and September 2027 entry.

What parents ask us first
Will my child be happy here?
Our boarders live in small houses with resident house parents and experienced teaching staff, and there is a qualified matron on site. Because the school is small, we notice quickly when something is not right, and we do something about it. New students are paired with a buddy and settled in properly, not just shown to a room.
Will they be supported?
Classes are small, so no one sits at the back. Every student has a tutor who meets them daily. Our learning support department is one of the strongest parts of the school, and help is offered before a student has to ask for it.
Will they succeed?
We are non-selective, and we are proud of it. There is no entrance exam. What we are known for is progress: students consistently achieve more here than their starting points predicted. Recent leavers have gone on to Oxford, Cambridge, Durham and Bristol.
Boarding that fits around your family
Full boarding
Students live at school during term, with evenings and weekends full of activities, trips and time with friends.
Weekly boarding
Students board during the school week and come home at weekends. Many families find it the best of both: the routine and friendships of boarding, with weekends together.
Flexi boarding
Students board on some nights, for example around clubs, matches or a busy week at home. Talk to our admissions team about a pattern that works for you.
“I love being here. You can breathe, think, and just be yourself.” – Current student
There is not much time to be bored
The school sits in 47 acres of fields and woodland inside a national park, ten minutes from the harbour town of Whitby and a short walk from the coast. Weekends are busy: surfing, mountain biking, climbing, fell running, canoeing, trips into York and Whitby. Our stables are on site and rated five stars at inspection.

The practical questions
Getting here
We are around an hour and a half from York. At the start and end of every term we arrange transport to and from York railway station, and day students can use our free school bus from Whitby, Scarborough and the surrounding villages.
Trying it first
Your child can come and stay with us for a night, a day or a week to see what boarding here is really like before you decide. Families join us at any point in the school year, not only in September.
Staying in touch
We have a dedicated boarding line and wifi across the school, so calls and messages home are easy. Weekly and flexi boarders are home regularly, and our website and social media are updated so you can see what your child has been up to.
Scholarships and bursaries
We offer Academic Excellence and Sixth Form Equine Scholarships for full boarders, and means-tested bursaries, typically up to 10% of fees. There is also a 10% sibling discount for the younger child.
What it costs
We keep our fees as inclusive as we can and publish them in full, so you can plan with the numbers in front of you.
