In Geography, we like to revisit map skills with each key stage 3 group and as a consequence, over the last few lessons the year 9s have been reacquainting themselves with their map skills. I am currently checking that everyone remembers how to do 4 and 6 figure grid references with varying degrees of success!
However, I also occasionally introduce some map skills not studied before and year 9s focus is on how height is shown on maps. Contour lines can be difficult to interpret on a flat map so by drawing their own using a potato, to replicate a hill, they are able to put the theory into practise. Lines closer together show that a slope is much steeper.
