For the Centenary Year of Fyling Hall each of the bands will have a link with the school and we’re delighted to announce the 2023 line-up:
Sweet Beans
Sweet Beans is a self-proclaimed ‘riot-jazz’ band hailing from Liverpool. They have been consistently performing and gigging around the city since early 2019, and since the pandemic have released two four-track EP’s as well as a single before it. They are currently streaming their 2 Eps ‘The Dance Side of the Track’ and ‘The Dark Side of the Dance’ on all major music streaming sites, so go check them out! The wonderful drummer Henry Atkinson is an ex pupil (and A Level music student) from Fyling Hall. Stylistically, the music is a combination of raucous big-band horns, jazzy harmonies, rocking electric guitar and rhythms rooted in techno and other dance music styles. Helen Maw from Liverpool Noise describes them as “The fusion of typically orchestral instruments with funky guitar riffs and of course the thumping kick drum makes for a genre bending, eye watering set”.
The Whitby Contingent
This Jazz Quartet was formed purely for the love of playing jazz! All four players are local musicians, with a wealth of experience playing music of many genres and with a particular liking for jazz. Alistair Lawrence who plays keyboard, spent many years living in Norway so the occasional Norwegian folk song will be heard as a starting point in the set! Twoof these fabulous musicians have a close connection with Fyling Hall, with Bob Butterfield being our incredible woodwind teacher at the school,Steve Cooper coming in annually to perform percussion workshops with our younger pupils. We are privileged to have this fantastic band perform at the Rose Garden Festival with guest vocalists making an appearance.
Project 13
This wonderful 7-piece group will be performing ska punk rock versions of all your favourite songs, to get you up dancing and singing along. It includes the incredibly talented, year 10 pupil, Theo Flintoft on the drums! Project 13 play tunes from the likes of Madness, the Specials, Reel Big Fish, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Less than Jake, Sublime, Wham, Eagle’s and many more. They’ve built up a ban?? local musicians who have played in numerous bands and thrown in to the mix a couple of new members to the music scene. The band is primarily about fun that everyone can relate to – playing well known tunes, but putting their own twist on them, and some not so popular tunes that will interest the inquisitive musical ear.
As well as the music you can expect BBQ, cakes, drinks, a tombola (I think) and face-painting. You are welcome to bring your own food and drink and we encourage you to bring your own utensils, plates and cups if you intend to buy refreshments in order to reduce waste.
