What People Say;

“For us it is the best event Fyling Hall hosts. It is set in the most enchanting location. It is an event that children and parents can enjoy. Even when it has rained we have still had a great time. Live music in a beautiful walled garden – what is not to love.” – attendee at previous festivals

“It’s such a nice atmosphere there and lovely to see the different generations all enjoying themselves.” – current Fyling Hall School parent

“Family event, great day out!” – Fyling Hall School parent and local resident.

“We enjoy the relaxed nature of the event, being able to sit in the rose garden in beautiful weather (🤞🏻), enjoy the music and equally the stunning views.” –  2022 and 2023 Rose Garden Festival attendee

“We are super excited for the return of the Rose Garden Festival this year. It is always a highlight of the year bringing together, student and staff from the school, and the local community to enjoy great music in a beautiful location. This year it is for a fantastic, but perhaps lesser known charity, Ovarian Cancer Action, a very worthy cause that we hope to raise significant funds for. It is always a fun filled event and we hope as many of you as possible will come and join the party.” – Helena Swain, Head of Music at Fyling Hall School and Festival Organiser

A Look Back at Rose Garden Festival 2023

For the Centenary Year of Fyling Hall each of the bands had a link with the school and alongside the headliners we were delighted to welcome student performers to the stage as well.

Sweet Beans

Sweet Beans is a self-proclaimed ‘riot-jazz’ band hailing from Liverpool. They have been consistently performing and gigging around the city since early 2019, and since the pandemic have released two four-track EP’s as well as a single before it. They are currently streaming their 2 Eps ‘The Dance Side of the Track’ and ‘The Dark Side of the Dance’ on all major music streaming sites, so go check them out!

The wonderful drummer Henry Atkinson is an ex pupil (and A Level music student) from Fyling Hall. Stylistically, the music is a combination of raucous big-band horns, jazzy harmonies, rocking electric guitar and rhythms rooted in techno and other dance music styles. Helen Maw from Liverpool Noise describes them as “The fusion of typically orchestral instruments with funky guitar riffs and of course the thumping kick drum makes for a genre bending, eye watering set”.

The Whitby Contingent

This Jazz Quartet was formed purely for the love of playing jazz! All four players are local musicians, with a wealth of experience playing music of many genres and with a particular liking for jazz. Alistair Lawrence who plays keyboard, spent many years living in Norway so the occasional Norwegian folk song will be heard as a starting point in the set!

Two of these fabulous musicians have a close connection with Fyling Hall, with Bob Butterfield being our incredible woodwind teacher at the school, Steve Cooper coming in annually to perform percussion workshops with our younger pupils. We were privileged to have this fantastic band perform at the Rose Garden Festival with guest vocalists making an appearance.

Project 13

This wonderful 7-piece group performed ska punk rock versions of all your favourite songs, to get everyone up dancing and singing along. It includes the incredibly talented, year 10 pupil, Theo Flintoft on the drums! Project 13 play tunes from the likes of Madness, the Specials, Reel Big Fish, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Less than Jake, Sublime, Wham, Eagle’s and many more.

They’ve built up a band from local musicians who have played in numerous bands and thrown in to the mix a couple of new members to the music scene. The band is primarily about fun that everyone can relate to – playing  well known tunes, but putting their own twist on them, and dropping in some not so popular tunes that will interest the inquisitive musical ear.

Alongside The Music

As well as the music there was BBQ with hotdogs and burgers, home-bakes cakes, freshly ground coffee courtesy of Baytown Coffee, drinks, a tombola,  and of course face-painting.

Many brought along their own food and drinks and set-up their chairs and picnic blankets on the grass.
