Sixth Form Equine Scholarship
For new full-boarding students | September 2027 entry
Fyling Hall’s Sixth Form Equine Scholarship gives committed young riders the opportunity to combine specialist equine study, practical experience and full boarding within our small and supportive school community.
The scholarship is open to new UK and international full-boarding students joining Fyling Hall in September 2027.
Successful scholars will receive full boarding at no additional cost and will pay an amount equivalent to the published day-school fee for the two years of Sixth Form.
Equine study in a school where riding belongs
Riding has been a long-standing and much-loved part of life at Fyling Hall. Introducing Equine Management to our Sixth Form curriculum was a natural development, giving students the opportunity to turn their enthusiasm for horses into a recognised academic qualification.
Successful applicants will study the BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Equine Management. The qualification may be combined with selected A-level subjects, subject to entry requirements and timetable arrangements.
The course brings together classroom learning and practical experience, helping students develop their understanding of horse care, health, welfare and stable management.
A distinctive place to learn
Fyling Hall has its own stables within the school grounds and a brand-new outdoor riding arena.
Our location between the North York Moors and the coast gives students opportunities to ride through beautiful countryside and on the beach. Equine Scholars are encouraged to use some of their Making a Difference time to take part in supervised activities at the school stables, helping them understand the everyday responsibilities involved in caring for horses.

More than a riding award
We are looking for responsible horsemanship, academic readiness, commitment and potential—not simply riding achievements or competition results.
Applicants should be able to ride independently and safely in walk, trot and canter, handle horses responsibly from the ground, follow instructions and respond positively to coaching.
They will normally be expected to have predicted or achieved GCSE grade 5 or above in English and Science, or the recognised international equivalent. Applicants must also demonstrate the maturity and independence needed to contribute positively to boarding and Sixth Form life.
Competition experience, Pony Club involvement and formal equine qualifications can support an application, but they are not essential. We are equally interested in dedication, willingness to learn and the potential to develop.
The scholarship is available to new full-boarding applicants only. Current Fyling Hall students and day applicants are not eligible.

Application and assessment
Applicants will need to complete Fyling Hall’s admissions application and the Equine Scholarship application, supported by their latest school report, a record of riding and horse-care experience, and appropriate references.
Shortlisted applicants will complete:
- a riding and practical horsemanship assessment;
- an applied equine knowledge task;
- an academic readiness task; and
- an interview.
International applicants who are unable to attend the assessment day may complete a remote process involving verified riding and horse-care videos, supervised tasks and an online interview. Any award made following remote assessment will remain conditional upon a satisfactory in-person riding and safety assessment on arrival.
