Fyling Hall proudly hosted its second annual A Focus on Sixth Form. Once again, we addressed the many factors that influence your decision on your next step in education. These factors remain subjects & timetabling, results, university application, teaching, inspection reports, location, extra-curricular activities, class size, facilities . . . and the list goes on!
Below please find some of the evening’s highlights.
Which subjects?
The evening started with Dr Richardson, Deputy Head, Academic, taking the audience through the burning question of subject choices. How does one choose? What does the Russell Group look for? Why does Fyling Hall only offer certain subject? What is an EPQ?
Leaders of our student body
Our new Head of Sixth Form, Ms Mitchell, then talked attendees through the important role our Sixth Formers play as leaders of our student body. We are very proud of their collaborative efforts. Learning to work together as a Sixth Form is something we have invested in, hosting a bespoke Sixth Form team building events and appointment of key roles. They continue to lead a number of full student body events and help across the school . . . important differentiators in a personal statement either for university or an apprenticeship.
Wellbeing
Miss Gilmour, Deputy Head, Pastoral, went on to reinforce Fyilng Hall’s commitment to wellbeing. Whist this is not bespoke to Sixth Form, we are very aware of the unique pressures they may face. With every member of staff being at least level 1 trained, we are also exploring the option of Sixth Formers taking part in this training.
Of course, we must also thank current Y12s, Manfred and Kian, for sharing their insight into Fyling Hall’s Sixth Form, and what made them decide to stay.
In summary . . .
Mr Allen, Fyling Hall’s Headmaster, wrapped up the second annual A Focus on Sixth Form by explaining that it is not about what your friends choose. It is what matters to you, and where you want to go next. If you are looking for teaching staff who know you, will continue to get the best out of you, there is no better environment than Fyling Hall. We continue to deliver excellent results thanks to our small class sizes and passionate teaching staff. Our Top 6 national position for progress is proof.
Being an international boarding school, some year groups include a higher percentage of boarding vs “daily” pupils. This was very much taken into consideration in planning this year’s event. Therefore, follow up sessions are planned with the pupils directly, and key excerpts from the evening will be shared by video with parents at home. It is not too late to learn more!
