On Friday 19th June, three recorder players from Junior School went to Saltburn Music Festival. Jeremy Normanton, Arthur Watson and Ruby Wormald performed their pieces in the wonderful acoustic of Saltburn Methodist Church, accompanied by Mrs Rowland.
Jeremy performed first, playing a ‘Gavotte’ by Handel, which he played with security and fluency, managing the final trills with great aplomb. Ruby followed with ‘Legend’ by Brian Bonsor, a lovely flowing piece where she was able to display different types of articulation and a musical understanding of shape and phrasing. Finally Arthur performed ‘Off to Somewhere’ by Sally Adams, giving us a real feel for the ‘rock’ style of the piece and with clear, focused tone throughout.
The adjudicator, Mr Philip Dewhurst, congratulated all the young musicians on their performances and gave thoughtful and helpful comments to every competitor. It was a pleasure also to listen to excellent playing from pupils at Sleights School, also taught by Mrs Rowland, who were playing here for the very first time.
The results were:-
1st Ruby Wormald
2nd Jeremy Normanton
3rd Lauren Thompson (Sleights)
