We are excited to announce the second band in the music festival (on 1st July)….They are a collection of fantastic, talented musicians from the Whitby area who have come together to form ‘The Whitby Contingent’.
“The Whitby Contingent” is a Jazz Quartet, formed purely for the love of playing jazz. All four players are local musicians. Each has a wealth of experience playing music of many genres and a particular liking for jazz. Alistair Lawrence who plays keyboard, has a major influence on the repertoire. He spent many years living in Norway which explains why the occasional Norwegian folk song will be heard as a starting point in the set.

Tony Turner (Bass), Steve Cooper (Drums), and Bob Butterfield (Flute and Sax) form the rest of the Quartet and are all very active musicians in our area. Two of these fabulous musicians have a close connection with Fyling Hall. Bob Butterfield is our incredible woodwind teacher at the school and Steve Cooper comes in annually to perform percussion workshops with our younger pupils. We are privileged to have this fantastic band perform at the Rose Garden Festival. Guest vocalists will also make an appearance.
The “Whitby Contingent” can be heard in the afternoon, on the last Friday of each month at the Brunswick Centre in Whitby.
