The headmaster has announced some exciting improvements at Fyling Hall this summer:
Last summer, as you may remember, we raised and replaced the roof on the Art Room. This year we will install a new floor into this building which will provide a first floor Art Room of about twice the current size, lit from above by four large roof windows. On the ground floor we will install a new Music Room, plus a practice room and recording studio. These facilities will help to ensure the continued development of these two popular and successful departments.
These changes will allow some other rooms to change use, providing new accommodation for Learning Support, an Economics and Business Studies classroom and a much larger Sixth Form Common Room to accommodate the increasing numbers in Years 12 and 13.
During the summer we will also be renewing and extending our IT network, and installing Wi-Fi across the whole school site. From September we hope to run a BYOD (‘bring your own device’) system for pupils. This will allow students to register laptops, netbooks, tablets and smart phones for use on the school network, whilst enabling us to continue to filter and monitor access to the internet. This investment will have a considerable and continuing impact on teaching at Fyling Hall. It will improve the ease with which pupils can work during study periods and prep and allow further opportunity for boarders to stay in touch with home.
Finally, we will be making some changes to boys’ boarding. Mulgrave and Ramsdale houses will merge, with boys’ boarding being centred on Mulgrave, where the youngest boarders will continue to have some separation from the older boys. Ramsdale will act as an annex for sixth formers. This pattern currently works well for girls’ boarding, and will allow us to provide better facilities for our boarders, including greatly enhanced common room space in Mulgrave.
I hope you will feel, as I do, that these investments and changes will serve current and future pupils well.
