I chose to take part in the DofE club in my school in September last year. The Duke Of Edinburgh Award is a four part award consisting of a skill, a physical, an expedition and a volunteering section. You can take part from the age of 14 to the age of 25 and the majority of schools offer it as an extra-curricular activity.

Recently, Fylinghall School’s Silver DofE group went on a 7 mile walk around the Yorkshire Moors- battling rain, sleet, snow, knee deep mud, and the occasional herd of Highland Cattle. We carried roughly 13 kilograms of equipment each, including clothing, tents, food, fuel and water, and I do admit we were all extremely tired by the end of the day.

Despite the time it takes to complete the sections, it really is an enjoyable award. It helps you to try new things and get out of your comfort zone, but at the end you have something to show for it. You spend some time away from home on the expedition, which can worry some people, but I assure you, your reliable team will help you through every step of the way.
