Life in Year 6 at Fyling Hall
By Karen Richardson, Year 6 Teacher
Year 6 at Fyling Hall is a very special year. For many children, it is their first glimpse into senior school life — and my role is to make sure that step feels calm, confident and genuinely enjoyable.
It is a year where children are truly known as individuals, where learning is flexible, and where pupils are given the space to grow academically, socially and emotionally — without the pressure of SATs or the intensity of large classes.
That doesn’t mean assessment isn’t important. Pupils take part in regular testing throughout the year, including SATs-style assessments, which help us understand each child’s progress and identify where support or challenge may be needed. The difference is that we don’t teach to the tests or create unnecessary pressure. Assessment is used thoughtfully, as one part of a wider picture, so children can build confidence and make steady progress without anxiety.
Starting Each Day Together
Every morning begins with our Year 6 form time. This is a calm, structured start to the day, where pupils settle in, talk through what’s ahead, and build independence in a supportive environment.
Those routines matter. They help children feel secure and confident, and they create a strong sense of belonging within the group.
“From the moment my girls arrived, they felt completely at home.”

A Gentle Introduction to Senior School
In the afternoons, Year 6 pupils move into the Senior School for subjects such as science, art, languages and music. They are taught by subject teachers, work in dedicated classrooms, and become familiar with senior school routines long before September arrives.
By the time pupils move into Year 7, senior school already feels familiar and exciting — not daunting. This gradual introduction makes a real difference to confidence and wellbeing.
Learning That Adapts to Each Child
One of the greatest advantages of our small class sizes is flexibility. Learning in Year 6 is not one-size-fits-all.
That flexibility allows us to respond carefully to assessment information — offering support or extension where it’s needed, rather than rushing children through content for the sake of results.
Some pupils benefit from extra support in small groups — for example, focused comprehension sessions that allow skills to be reinforced at a comfortable pace.
Others are ready to be stretched further. Where appropriate, pupils explore:
- KS3 and Year 7 material
- more complex comprehension and problem-solving
- extension activities in their strongest subjects
- even GCSE-style challenges, supported by Sixth Form mentors
This balance of support and challenge ensures every child progresses in a way that suits them.
“She loves learning, and her teachers recognised that immediately. Mrs Richardson differentiates her work to make sure she’s always stretched.”

A Rich and Varied Year
Year 6 pupils enjoy a wonderfully broad and balanced week. Alongside their academic learning, they take part in:
- Forest School, including den building, fire lighting, mindfulness and creative outdoor activities
- Swimming
- Riding opportunities
- Participation in the Eskdale Festival of the Arts
- The Rotary Speak Out Competition
- Choir and local performances, including the Whitby Christmas Festival
When appropriate, pupils are also invited to join Senior School sports teams, giving them the chance to stretch themselves and feel part of the wider school community.
“Evelynne had so many opportunities in sport — even competing in higher age groups to help her reach her potential.”

These experiences help pupils discover their strengths, build confidence, and enjoy a balanced, fulfilling school life.
Looking Ahead to Year 7
Because Year 6 pupils spend time learning in the Senior School, working with subject teachers, and getting to know older pupils, the move into Year 7 feels natural and reassuring.
In the summer term, Year 7 tutors organise a Transition Day, giving pupils the chance to spend a full day in the Senior School alongside others who will be joining in Year 7. It’s an opportunity to meet staff, get to know new classmates, and become familiar with the rhythm of the school day — helping pupils feel confident, comfortable, and ready for the next step.
“Both girls have had chances here they simply wouldn’t have had elsewhere.”
— Year 6 Parent
The result is a confident, happy transition into senior school — and a group of pupils who feel ready for what comes next.
