Boarding from age 11  ·  North Yorkshire, England

A British boarding school small enough to know every student

Fyling Hall is a small day and boarding school on the North Yorkshire coast, founded in 1923. Around 180 students. Every one of them known by name, supported, and encouraged to do more than they thought they could.

Places available for January and September 2027 entry.

What parents ask us first

Will my child be happy here?

Our boarders live in small houses with resident house parents and experienced teaching staff, and there is a qualified matron on site. Because the school is small, we notice quickly when something is not right, and we do something about it. New students are paired with a buddy and settled in properly, not just shown to a room.

Will they be supported?

Classes are small, so no one sits at the back. Every student has a tutor who meets them daily. Our learning support department is one of the strongest parts of the school, and help is offered before a student has to ask for it.

Will they succeed?

We are non-selective, and we are proud of it. There is no entrance exam. What we are known for is progress: students consistently achieve more here than their starting points predicted. Recent leavers have gone on to Oxford, Cambridge, Durham and Bristol.

English support

Your child does not need perfect English to start here

Every international boarder has daily English lessons, taught in small groups by specialist teachers with CELTA qualifications. It is included in the international boarding fee, not charged as an extra.

Those lessons run alongside everything else. Students are in mainstream classes, in clubs, at weekends, using English all day, which is why it comes on quickly.

“Studying in a foreign country is certainly not an easy thing to do. However, with immense support received from the staff, as well as other students, nothing seems impossible.” – Current student

Life outside lessons

There is not much time to be bored

The school sits in 47 acres of fields and woodland inside a national park, ten minutes from the harbour town of Whitby and a short walk from the coast. Weekends are busy: surfing, mountain biking, climbing, fell running, canoeing, trips into York and Whitby. Horse riding is available on site.

The practical answers

The parts parents worry about

Visas

Fyling Hall is a licensed student sponsor, so we issue the CAS your child needs for a UK Child Student visa. Our admissions team has done this many times and will take you through it step by step.

Getting here

We arrange transport to Manchester Airport, other nearby airports and York railway station at the start and end of every term. If you need to travel outside those times, we will help you arrange it.

Staying in touch

We have a dedicated boarding line. There is wifi across the school, so calls and messages home are easy, and our website and social media are updated regularly so you can see what your child has been up to.

Guardianship

Many overseas families arrange a UK-based guardian for their child, someone who can look after them during exeats, half terms and in an emergency. Our admissions team can point you towards accredited guardianship organisations so you can compare options and choose the right fit for your family.

How it works

Tell us a little about your child. There is no obligation and no cost.

Send a school report and a passport copy

Our Deputy Head reviews it, and our Headmaster if needed. We also ask for a letter, or video explaining a little about yourself and why you want to join Fyling Hall

Meet the Headmaster

A conversation over video, usually about half an hour. There is no entrance exam.

Accept your place

We issue the contract, and the registration fee and boarding deposit secure the place.

Visa and travel

We apply for the CAS and help with the visa, then arrange transfers for the start of term.

Not sure yet?

Your child can come and stay with us for a day or a week and see what boarding here is really like. Families join us at any point in the school year, not only in September. If you are hoping to start in January, get in touch by November so there is time for the visa.

“They have integrated all international students into their community successfully, which has resulted in them contributing significantly to school life.”ISI inspection report

“What struck me first about boarding at Fyling Hall is that there isn’t time to even think about the word ‘boring’.”Current student
