Year 9s recently investigated the geography of football. On first reading that you may wonder what that has to do with geography but look closer and you will see.
Geographical skills were needed as pupils used atlases to discover the many places footballs pass through, in their journey from Pakistan to the U.K. We will investigate which countries have won the World Cup and whether these wins are linked to a country’s level of development. Pupils will also study the social conditions for those who make footballs and discuss whether it is morally right to ignore the plight of those trapped in economic servitude. Football is a worldwide phenomenon and as such, it impacts on many people’s lives, no matter where they live.
