Alumni of Fyling Hall are a diverse and interesting group who remember their time at Fyling Hall fondly. Many note how they made life-long friends at Fyling Hall and we are proud to have families that have been with the school through the generations.
Renowned chef, Andrew Pern studied at Fyling Hall up to the age of 15 and runs the Michelin starred restaurant The Star Inn at Harome, on the edge of the North York Moors. He followed his father and grandfather before him to Fyling Hall and remembers his time fondly. The Fyling Hall School plaque still hangs in his bar. Thanks to Andrew for sharing his thoughts below.
“The Pern family have had possibly one of the longest relationships with Fyling Hall as my Grandfather, Hugh Pern was one of the founder pupils when the school opened under Mab Bradley, then his son Hugh Alan, and his sons, my brother Chris and myself Andrew.
I started my school ‘career’ at Whitehall at the age of four and half, progressing onto Fyling Hall and left at the age of 15 (due to August birthday!). Possibly not the most academic student they’ve ever had but my love for rugby allowed me to excel at this at least!!
I met some great friends from around the world and still keep in touch now with old classmates. The setting of the school is second to none, expeditions to the woods or “down Bay” provided some interesting, character building moments!!
The school motto of “The days that make you happy make you wise” has certainly stuck with me, as the school plaque hangs in the bar of my Michelin starred establishment with pride. It’s amazing how many guests notice it and ask when I was there as they were there too!!
A true Star school in many ways, and long may it continue!!! Well done all!!” – Andrew Pern
