After half a year of fundraising and preparation, Fyling Hall’s 2023-24 head boys boarded a plane on Saturday to start an expedition with the British Exploring Society. Tomas and Toby Richardson are taking part in the society’s three and a half week Canadian Yukon expedition. Young people aged 16 – 25 apply for a limited number of places on these expeditions and competition for a place is tough. Last year Tomas and Toby learned about the society and began their journey with the application. Expeditions are to remote places, designed to push young people out of their comfort zone and develop resilience, determination, confidence and courage. They will also be involved in valuable scientific research. As well as preparing practically, mentally and emotionally for the trip their is a fundraising total to achieve prior to the expedition. Tomas and Toby share their final blog before the expedition here…
Heading off to The Canadian Wilderness
And so, the journey begins! It is with great excitement and anticipation (if not a little trepidation) that we write this blog- a final piece before heading off. On the 22nd July we set off to the great Canadian wilderness – our lodgings for the next three and a half weeks. During this time we will trek, canoe and carry out scientific research with the British Exploring Society.
We are delighted to announce that both fundraising targets have now been met and would like to thank everyone who has made this incredible expedition possible whether through donation, sponsoring the Big Ride, attending the quiz night, buying cookies and cakes, or offering prizes and buying tickets for the raffle. The support we have received over the past few months has been very much appreciated and acts as a heart-warming reminder of the incredible community spirit within Fyling Hall School.
We look forward to sharing pictures of the expedition following our return and will hopefully have few bear-encounters to reflect upon.

Fyling Hall wishes them all the best on this epic adventure and we look forward to hearing more upon their return.
Student Expeditions
For those students that want to stay in the UK and maybe a little closer to school but still experience expeditions, Fyling Hall offers the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award at bronze, silver and gold. It’s a fantastic experience and opportunity to build resilience and develop confidence – as well as supporting university applications of course. You can read more about a recent DoE expedition here. Mrs Trotter runs the DoE programme and student’s are encouraged to get involved. Those wishing to join next year’s programme can speak to her in September,
