Fyling Hall’s under 14 girls hockey team had a hugely successful afternoon at the annual district tournament held at Lady Lumley’s School. In a league format the girls had to play all opposing schools in 15 minute matches.

First was the hosts Lady Lumleys. Although not quite hitting their stride the girls dominated possession and after several good opportunities and saves from Lumley’s keeper the girls came out 1-0 winners.

Match 2 was immediately afterwards against Malton. Again the team kept the ball really well with the midfield cutting out any counter attacks and feeding the forwards. After some stubborn defending the girls found a way and won 1-0.

Match 3 followed a similar pattern with Fyling Hall largely dominating possession but wasting a few chances. The defence had to be on their toes to snuff out any counter attacks. Eventually the deadlock was broken and the game finished 1-0.

The final match was against Ryedale a team who had beaten us earlier in the season. The girls knew that a draw would not be enough due to Ryedale’s superior goal difference. After a cagey opening few minutes Ryedale were quick out of the blocks but the girls managed to repel any attacks, thwarting their shooting opportunities. Eventually the tide turned, passes were being made and chances created. The girls scored from a quick rebound at the far post. The match was then rounded off with a great 2nd goal from our captain.

It was a great afternoon for the team who have shown real potential over the last few seasons. As a result of their hard work they can be very proud of their achievements. Congratulations to the under 14 girls hockey team.
