Fyling Hall Facts: Exploring our BTEC in Equine Management
At Fyling Hall School, we’re proud to prepare our students for exciting futures by combining academic excellence with real-world opportunities. In September 2024, we were delighted to introduce the BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Equine Management, a dynamic addition to our Sixth Form curriculum.
This qualification is perfect for students who are passionate about horses and eager to pursue careers in the equine industry or related fields. Equivalent to an A-Level, it offers the ideal balance of practical experience and theoretical knowledge, ensuring our students are well-equipped to follow their dreams.

Why Choose the BTEC in Equine Management?
A Unique Opportunity:
As far as we know, Fyling Hall is the only school in the region to offer this qualification alongside our traditional A-Levels, RSL Diplomas in Performing Arts, and the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). This diversity of options allows students to tailor their learning to their interests and career goals. “The equine industry is ever-growing and worth £8 billion in the UK alone,” says Stable Manager and Riding Instructor Coleen McQue. “It’s fantastic that Fyling Hall is now offering students the chance to study and prepare for a future in this exciting field. I’m delighted to see this qualification added to our curriculum.” Industry-Relevant Skills: The BTEC equips students with practical skills highly valued by employers. From stable management to equine health and nutrition, students gain hands-on experience that opens doors in the equine industry. What Will Students Learn?
The course covers a range of engaging and valuable topics, including:
- Equine Structure, Form, and Function: Understanding the anatomy and physiology of horses.
- Equine Health and Welfare: Ensuring the care and management of horses for their well-being.
- Horse Behaviour: Studying natural behaviours and effective management techniques.
- Riding Horses in the Open: Developing riding skills and understanding riding theory.
- Work Experience in the Equine Sector: Gaining real-world insights through practical placements.
On the science side of the course, students delve deep into areas such as equine skin and muscular tissue, biological systems including circulatory, nervous, endocrine, excretory and reproductive systems before moving on to gross anatomy, joints, hooves and confirmation. This integration of scientific principles is a vital aspect of the qualification.
“Teaching the science behind equine management is incredibly rewarding,” says Mrs Aldous, Fyling Hall’s Head of Science. “Understanding the biological systems and anatomy of horses provides students with a strong foundation for careers in veterinary science, equine care, and beyond. It’s inspiring to see students connect classroom theory with their practical experiences in the stables.”
This blend of scientific rigour and practical application ensures that students leave Fyling Hall prepared for a range of exciting career paths.
