Fyling Hall’s first BTEC Equine Management students celebrate success
Two Fyling Hall Sixth Form students have made a little piece of school history by becoming the first to complete the BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Equine Management at the school.
Katie A, who joined Fyling Hall in 2018, and Katie W, who joined in 2024, have successfully completed the course, combining classroom study with practical learning and regular experience at Fyling Hall’s on-site stables.
Riding has been a long-standing and much-loved part of life at Fyling Hall. With the school’s location close to both the coast and the North York Moors, students have opportunities to ride on the beach and across some of the most beautiful countryside in North Yorkshire.
Introducing Equine Management to the Sixth Form curriculum therefore felt like a natural development. The course allows students to build on their enthusiasm for horses while gaining a deeper understanding of equine care, welfare, health and management.
The qualification involves much more than riding. Students are expected to connect what they learn in the classroom with practical situations at the stables, while completing the independent study and coursework required at Sixth Form level.
Miss Aldous, Biology teacher at Fyling Hall, said:
“Equine Management brings together scientific understanding and practical experience. It has been wonderful to see Katie and Katie develop their knowledge and apply what they have learnt to real situations. As the first students at Fyling Hall to complete the course, they should be very proud of what they have achieved.”
Through their practical work, the students have developed their confidence in horse care and handling while learning the importance of observation, consistency and responsible decision-making.
Miss McQue, Stable Manager at Fyling Hall, said:
“Good horsemanship is about far more than riding. It is about putting the welfare of the horse first, working safely and being prepared to get involved in every aspect of stable life. Both students have shown real commitment, and it has been lovely to see their confidence and understanding develop.”
For Katie A, completing the qualification marks the next step in a Fyling Hall journey that began in 2018. She will now continue developing her equine knowledge and experience through an equine coaching apprenticeship at Bishop Burton College.
The successful completion of the school’s first Equine Management course comes at an exciting time for riding at Fyling Hall. A brand-new outdoor arena has recently been completed and will be used by students from September, adding to the practical facilities available on the school site.
