Message from the Headmaster
Welcome to Fyling Hall School’s website, giving you a taste of our unique community. We are very proud of our school, 100 years old now and set in the North York Moors National Park, with magnificent views over Robin Hood’s Bay. But it is the community of staff and pupils that creates the family atmosphere and makes the school what it is. We welcome boys and girls, day and boarding pupils of all abilities and we offer excellent teaching (our pupil’s regularly exceed baseline scores and their predicted grades) and high quality pastoral care with many opportunities to take part in a variety of activities.
Small we may be, but the school has comprehensive facilities including an indoor and open-air theatre; a sports hall and climbing wall; an all-weather astro pitch; a cricket and athletics ground, newly renovated science laboratory, as well as our very own horses, ponies and stables. We are also very active in drama and music and produce regular concerts and theatre performances throughout the year.
Our founder chose the school’s motto from a John Masefield poem: ‘The days that make us happy make us wise’ and we believe in this as much today as yesterday.
Pupils come from down the road, around the country or overseas and we have several generations from the same families who have attended the school. This is because Fyling Hall is special. I know this first hand as I boarded and studied here for seven years and I returned to teach here for another fifteen. I am delighted to be now leading a school which means so much to me into the future, and I look forward to welcoming you here.
Steven Allen, Headmaster
