The maths department at Fyling Hall is busy. Our Year 11 maths students went to Guisborough to attend an A-Level Maths Taster session organized by the Advanced Maths Support Programme (AMSP). This was a great way to understand what A-Level maths is about and how it differs from GCSE. Students spent the afternoon problem solving, reasoning and exploring different aspects of Maths A-Level. The event emphasized how maths can be fun and challenging. It looked at how studying maths in years 12 and 13 can lead on to a variety of university courses and exciting careers. Students can start thinking beyond the classroom.
UKMT National Maths Challenge
Our Year 10s and 11s pushed themselves to take part in the UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge. This is a national maths competition that challenges students from across the UK. We’re proud of our students for getting out of their comfort zone and really engaging their problem-solving skills. The problems are designed to make students think and to encourage mathematical reasoning and precision of thought. Year 10 and 11 had the opportunity to apply mathematical techniques to solve some interesting problems.
The Year 12 and 13 maths and further maths students all did a fantastic job competing in the Senior Maths Challenge last term. Well done to all of them, and to Polina Ekaette and Tomas Richardson for achieving silver (the top 16%), and to Ryan Lam for achieving Bronze (the top 25%).
We challenge you to test your own mathematical fluency and reasoning! Why not try it out for yourself using the UKMT online Challenges, download past papers, solutions and investigations here. Let us know how you get on!
Higher Problem Solving Event
Higher Problem Solving is one of the next events we are attending. Year 12 maths students will head to Durham for a full day of workshops. The workshops will look at specifc ‘trick’ implemented in maths problems and look at different styles of problems and their solutions. The workshop will also ‘provide information regarding STEP/MAT/TMUA for university entrance exams and signpost students to help, resources and support available within the region’.
Maybe in the past maths was simply classroom based but those days are long gone. Fyling Hall gets students out and about experiencing maths in different ways and different settings and looking to the future.
